Digipak - getting started

Post a response to the following (you can present this work as a power point if you like)
  • What is a digipak?
  • What strategies are often used by the record company to encourage the audience to purchase the digipak (remember, the album of songs can easily be downloaded from i-tunes, so why buy a digipak - in what ways is it different to a regular CD album?)
  • What are the key elements that make a good digipak? Refer to images, text, and style.
  • What information is included on the back of a digipak?
  • What information should be included in a poster to promote an album/digipak?
  • Have a look at CD covers/adverts for three different genres e.g. indie, folk, RnB I have posted examples above for you to use if you like. What are the conventions of the different genres - what do they have in common? Look at lighting, setting, effects, mise-en-scene (costume, expression, props), colour and fonts used.
  • Present a flat plan for your digipak (the layout)
  • What images will you plan to use? Outline locations, shot types, mise-en-scene.
If you are presenting this as a power point you should upload to SlideShare and then share to your blog.

Digipak & Advert - a little head start

You are required to create a digipak and advert to promote the album that your artist is releasing.
You will need to post the following:
  • Labelling conventions of both forms
  • Analysis of four examples (two of each) exploring representation
  • Explain the conventions of your particular genre
  • Planning for your own photographs for each including: location; mise-en-scene; props; costume; lighting; hair/make-up.
  • At least 40 photographs taken for each.
  • Evidence of image manipulation in Photoshop e.g. cropping; colour; lighting; effects.
  • 1st draft (we will assess one anothers work)
  • Final pieces.
This work is worth 20% of the coursework grade (music video is worth 40%) so it could mean the difference between a C and an A.

I am going to post further support in case you want to get a head start this weekend. Otherwise I will be going through this in more detail in lesson on Tuesday.

You should also be keeping a shooting diary as you go along. Tell the reader how the shoot went. What did you achieve? What went well? What problems did you encounter? Do you have to update your plans at all? If you have to change your plans DO NOT delete your old planning - this all counts! If you have to film for longer then just update the schedule.

Interim Deadline

I will be marking the blogs tomorrow after lunch and will be focusing on the following:
·         Planning & research – ensure that everything is up to date.
·         First cut of video – upload to YouTube and at least put a link for me to find it. If you can embed then great!

If you want detailed feedback I suggest you get all the stuff on the blog!

Three and a half weeks until the final deadline – this includes the digipak and advert!

Digipak & Advert Analysis

Digipak & Magazine Adverts
As you are starting to film your music video footage, now would be a good time to start thinking about your digipak and magazine adverts.

You need to collect a range of examples to analyse. We have a scanner so you can upload images.

Firstly you need to analyse the images on the digipak/CD cover so use these prompts as a guide:

The name of the artist is…
This connotes…
The font/lettering is best described as…This connotes….
The physical appearance of the star is….(mention pose, camera angle, clothing, facial expressions, etc)This connotes…
The dominant image within the front cover is…This suggests…
The title of the album is…This signifies…
Dominant colours include…These connote…
The CD is produced by…This appeals to the audience because…
The record label is…This connotes…
The artist fits into the genre of…This is signified by…Attitudes and values associated with this genre include…
The target audience for this CD cover is…The cover is appealing to this audience because…

The focus should be on how the images have been constructed to create a particular representation, the conventions of the form and how it related to other promotional material i.e. music video.

Aim to analyse two examples of each in detail.
